Over the years, I’ve joined a decent number of loyalty programs for a varying number of reasons. Whether I signed up at the cash register so that I could save a buck on whatever I was buying, or I legitimately wanted to connect with the brand because I was actually a loyal customer, there was a running thread that I noticed throughout the majority of them.

I just wasn’t engaged enough. Why? Well, it varies from program to program.

Keeping your customers engaged should be one of your chief focuses when putting a loyalty program in place. One of the best ways to go about that is to implement a text-based loyalty program. Let’s take a look at an example.

One of the programs I’d like to point to comes from Redbox. In case you’re somehow not familiar with the company, Redbox is a rental service for DVDs, Blu-Rays, and games that’s operated out of automated retail kiosks that are usually placed at the grocery store, Wal-Mart, etc. The service is very easy to use (and cheap). All you have do is pick your movie or game, swipe your card, and bring it back when you’re through.

From a consumer standpoint, Redbox’s loyalty program is just as easy. It’s called the “Redbox Text Club” and it’s one of the few programs that I can genuinely say that I’ve used a lot. Plus I actually enjoy it! The reason it works so well is because it keeps me engaged with the service by semi-frequently sending me texts featuring promo codes to save money on rentals. Sometimes, if I’m busy, I won’t even use the promo codes. But they’ll make me stop and think to myself, “Man, I really should rent that one movie I’ve been dying to see this weekend.”

Redbox’s program worked for me where others didn’t. Here’s a few more benefits that text-based loyalty programs can provide for you.

  • As I’ve already highlighted, they’ll keep your customers engaged. According to 3Cinteractive, 72% of consumers would be more likely to sign up for a loyalty program if the process was simplified down to a text message. It’s because texting isn’t just easy, it’s immediate.
  • Having a digital loyalty program means that everything is trackable. If you’re still using hole-punch cards, then this is a major step up.
  • With services like CoGoBuzz, you’ll be able to automate your text messages to customers, even months in advance.
