If you have a business, you have a brand. That brand has a personality. It has defining characteristics. It has a certain feel. And if you’re doing it right – it’s all consistent.

Digital branding is an essential component of branding that can often be overlooked by many small businesses. Your company’s digital image is where you’ll make a massive number of first impressions. During 2017, the amount of consumers searching online for local businesses totaled 97%, according to BrightLocal.

Want to give your digital brand an upgrade? Get started with these five easy steps.

Step 1: Define your brand

What is your brand? More specifically, what’s your brand’s story? This encompasses the who, what, where, when, and why of your business. Your brand is more than color schemes and logos. It’s the people that run the business, it’s why they believe in the product(s), and so much more.

Your brand’s identity needs to be pervascent within every aspect of your digital image. The digital landscape provides practically limitless opportunities to project your brand’s stories in a variety of ways. Don’t underestimate what you can do.

Step 2: Maintain Consistency

As I mentioned, if your branding is being done correctly, it’s being done consistently. Indeed, brand consistency is a highly important factor to pay attention to in managing your business’s image, especially when it comes to your digital presence.

Branding is the sum of many parts, and consistency is the grease that keeps the wheels turning. I can’t tell you how many websites or social media pages I’ve been to for businesses that don’t keep their branding straight. Old logos, outdated products, and dead webpages are just a few examples. You can ensure base-level consistency across all your platforms by, at the very least, keeping everything up-to-date.

Step 3: Social Media and Content

With a defined brand, you’ll be in an opportune position for social media success.

To excel at social media, your brand needs quality content. For many customers, your digital brand is only as valuable as the content. Consider the breath of digital content your business can provide. Blogs, videos, podcasts, and infographics are just a few examples of content that work to foster an active social community.

Consider which social platforms are right for your business. You’ll also need to decide what content your audience wants to see, and where they want to see it.

Step 4: Avoid brand burnout

These days, customers are bombarded with a constant swathe of advertising, clickbait, and low-effort attempts at capturing attention. Brand burnout is a real phenomena. You don’t want to fall victim to it. It’s easy to pump out post after post. Go for quality, not quantity.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Abide by the 80/20 rule. 80% of your content should exist to serve the customer in some way. 20% should be reserved for promotional purposes.

Also, stay consistent. If you maintain an average of two posts a day, then stick to it.
